Hey Hey, mommies! It’s LaTersa Blakely, The Mommy Maven again. These self-care tips for stay at home moms is just what you need. As a busy work at home and stay at home mom, I have found that what worked for me when my kids were younger, just is not doing the job now that they are teenagers. See, I started my entrepreneurial journey back in 2009, after leaving my administrative assistant job. I was nearly working only to pay childcare with maybe twenty bucks left over. It really made me frustrated to see that all those hours spent at the hospital and working my butt off only amounted to me having twenty bucks. So, when I came to my sense, it was agreed upon that it was best that I come home to be with the children: In today’s blog, I will be sharing with you how to take better care of yourself whether you are a stay at home mom or a work at home mom. Before we go any further, let me just say that whether you’re a SAHM, WAHM or Working mom, we all are awesome mommy rockstars!
Being a mom is one of the greatest accomplishments that I have ever accomplished and every day that God blesses me to be alive, I try to show my gratitude for all my blessings. Now, I can’t lie that there are days where I want to yell and scream and I do from time to time; but now that my kids are tweens and teenagers, my load is a lot less burdened. See, they are old enough to do for themselves. If I want to take a nap, I can do it and know they won’t burn the house down LOL. I enjoy not having to cook every day because they can find them something to eat without me having to get up and actually cook something. I always tell moms to enjoy each season of motherhood because they are all different and will require different parts of you. So, today, I’m going to be sharing with you a lot of tips that have worked for me with self-care and sanity rituals that keep me at my highest self.

22 Self Care Tips For Stay At Home Moms
- Prayer: I know you have probably heard me say this many times, but it’s true; I have to center myself every morning before the sun comes up or I even step a foot out of my bed. I like to talk to God and thank him for another day. Prayer truly does work.
- Show Gratitude: When my eyes open in the morning, I like to just go through in my mind all the things that I’m grateful for; I can’t allow myself to give the devil any lead way to throw his negativity in my head.
- Wake up early: I am up most days at 4:30 am so I can hear my own thoughts because I know once my kids are up, it will be a whirlwind of “mama, mama, mama” can I and May I. Its always a good thing to wake up early.
- Journaling: I journal just about every day. It helps me to talk to God; clear my head and just plan out what I want to accomplish for the day. I have been journaling for over twenty years and I swear it has helped me in more ways than none. A transparency moment here: I tried to commit suicide when I was younger and upon arriving at the psych hospital, one of my psychiatrists introduced me to journaling. He said if you don’t want to speak about a thing, write it down and you will be able to see your thoughts clearer. So, I’ve been journaling ever since. It’s very therapeutic for me and the sanity of my mind. I encourage you to give it a try.
- Drink lots of water: I know water doesn’t taste as good as your coffee, wine, or teas, but it is said that we should drink at least 8 glasses of water daily. To spice up your water a bit, try adding slices of lemon and other fruits like strawberries, kiwis, pineapples. It really does taste good
- Talk & dialogue with yourself. This is something that has helped me throughout the years. When you talk to yourself, it helps you to hear clearly your own thoughts. It helps you sometimes to solve your own problems.
- Make A To-Do-List: Every night before I go to bed, I make my list out for the next day. I categorize it into 3 areas: Personal, Business & family. I list the 3 top priority things that I absolutely must get done. This really helps you to stay focused and makes you feel like you have accomplished something. I have a template that you can download immediately to start using.

- Leave room for emergencies: While its good to have a list, you can never plan everything; Sometimes you just have to go with the flow and not worry so much about every little detail.

- Put you on your daily calendar: While you are making everybody else’s appointment, make sure you are putting yourself on your calendar. You deserve to be on your schedule.
- Make yourself a priority: We as moms, wives, sisters, and friends, we seem to always be checking for everyone else except ourselves. We can be feeling the worse, but if one of our loved ones need us, there we go running around. Sometimes, you have to learn how to miss a few parties or engagements for your own sanity.
- Learn how to say NO: I had to learn this one the hard way. I recall years ago when I was married, my then-husband had gotten laid off from his job and I didn’t know if I was going or coming. I had two little ones at home, I wasn’t working and boy my survival skills kicked real fast. I found myself at the food stamps office, running around trying to find a side hustle just to bring money in the house while he was working on getting unemployment. I didn’t notice until it was too late that I was depleted and burnt out. I had stopped taking my medication and wasn’t eating right until one night I collapsed in our bedroom. When I woke up, I was in the ER; not a fun place to be. Saying NO would have saved me from a vacation to the ER.

- Build your emergency fund up. I try to always have an extra $1000 stashed away in my savings because I never know when I might need it. That keeps a lot of stress away just from this one little thing. As a single mom, its very imperative to be prepared if my kids or I might need something.
- Reading something positive. It’s very important to be mindful of what you are reading because those words are creating thoughts and those thoughts become things.
- Be careful what you watch too: I know I’m a huge fan of Criminal minds and what I’ve learned is if I watch that show right before bed, I have nightmares on top of nightmares. I’m trying to slowly stop watching it but it is so addicting. Pray for me LOL
- Go for a walk: A nice walk on the trail or somewhere around your neighborhood could do you and your emotional and mental space some good
- Try something new: It doesn’t matter how old you are; you should never stop trying and learning new things. I always say it keeps me young.
- Always be a student. You don’t know everything and its okay to admit when you don’t. With all the technology and social internet, you can learn all types of things.
- Listen and engage with your kids. Yes they are your babies, but you can learn something from them; True story, some of the music and dances that are out now, I am clueless, but oh I bet my baby girl knows every last one of them. It’s funny having her try to teach me some of them; I crack myself up trying to let her know mama still got it.
- Ask for help: yes we are super moms and we can do just about everything; BUT, at some point, your body will shut down if you don’t learn how to listen to it. That’s one thing I do miss about being married, I had 24/7 help right under the same roof. Not saying that he doesn’t help now because he does, it’s just from afar. But even still, I have my parents and church family to support and help me because I can’t do it by myself. It really does takes a village. You just gotta know who your peeps are.
- Enjoy the small things. Sometimes, we get so caught up with the major goals or things that we want to do that we miss out on just being present in the moment. We work ourselves to death by chasing after big things.
- Detox from social media: Yes, with this digital era, you have to know when to take a break from it. Also, you have to be careful not to let it consume us. Instead of enjoying the great things around us, we get so caught up with taking pics and videos for social media instead of living in the moment.
- Celebrate yourself and your wins: Instead of waiting until you finish the goal, celebrate the small wins along the way. Learn how to celebrate you because if you are waiting on someone else to do it for you, it might be an old gray-headed little lady by the time it happens or if it occurs at all.
Conclusion: I hope you know that all I want for each and every one of you to be healthy and whole in every area of your life. It is so important that we as moms take some time out for ourselves. If our health is not up to part or we are not feeling our best, we are no good to no one else around us. My prayer is that you put some of these tips to use.
