5 Things Every Mompreneur Must Do Before End Of Year

The end of the year is less than two weeks away. Everybody is either just starting their Christmas shopping or wrapping things up with final purchases.  I don’t know about you, but I get a kick out of getting ready for the new year.  And today I want to share with you briefly my top 3 things you must do before the new year rolls around.

5 Things Every Mompreneur Must Do Before The End of The Year

1) Tie up loose ends. Meaning, complete your projects that have been lingering around the home office.  Finish up your shopping for equipment whether it be home or business.  One thing you don’t want to do is carry old unfinished projects into the new year.

2) Balance your books. If you handle your own books, now is a great time to do so or if you have an accountant.  Going into the new year with the numbers of what you achieved in 2014, will give you a great view of how things went and what things worked for your business and what didn’t.

3) Purchase your last items for business.  This time of the year is one of my favorites because I get to invest with some amazing business products that will help propel me into higher debths in the new year.  Get this, you can write these off on your taxes.  Any donations you might have made during the year can be deductions for your taxes.

4) Review your Goals for 2017.  Review them to see what you accomplished and what gave you the most return on your investments. Find out what worked best for you and do more of that in the upcoming year.  As far as the things that didn’t work, eliminate those.

5) Set some new & smart goals. Yes, you will never experience success with just hoping and wishing and praying.  You need to set some goals and put some action steps into place so that you set yourself up to excel and exceed your wildest expectations. If you need help with getting clear on your goals and setting a plan of action, Click here and let’s chat!

I do hope these few steps will get your creative juices flowing so that you will bring in the new year with a bang. If these steps have been helpful to you, please feel free to share them with your friends and family.

5 Mistakes New Entrepreneurs Make

My journey as an entrepreneur started in 2009. I can’t begin to tell you how many times I wanted to quit and throw in the towel. It had got so bad at one point that I had started doubting what God had placed on the inside of me. I thought I was going to be working a 9-5 job forever and not be able to live my dreams. Thank God for second and third chances right? Along the way, I have made my share of mistakes and believe you me, I’m going to continue to fail my way to the top. One of my favorite quotes that I love to say is: “On your way up the success ladder, reach back and help someone else, so when I make it to the top, I won’t be alone”

Being a mompreneur has taught me a lot of valuable lessons along the way, but I wouldn’t have all of them without my mistakes/failures. Today, I want to share with you a few of them:

5 Mistakes New Entrepreneurs Make

  • Not Gaining Clarity: See, I had this big old idea that I could sell to any and everybody. All I had on my agenda, early on, was to make money and make lots of it. Well, my little fantasy came crumbling down after my first year in business. I didn’t make crap, but oh honey I was in the -$3,000 on my tax return. I was so selfish as to not hire a coach to help me gain clarity because I had the notion that why would I give my money to a coach when I’m not even making money. One of the main reasons why you might not be making money in your business is because you don’t know who you are speaking to. I always say gain clarity and the money will follow.

  • Not picking a niche: At that time, I didn’t know what a niche was and really frankly, I didn’t care. Again, all I wanted to do was make money at home so I could be with my kiddos. Childcare was killing us and I needed a way of escape. After a while, the word niche started chasing me and it became nerve wrecking. I knew I had to do something, otherwise, I was going to be doing the same thing the following year.

  • Giving away everything for free: I felt like in order for me to build the know like and trust factor, I had to let them test it before they buy it right? Wrong, it’s a limit to how much you should give away and not give away the whole cow. I was giving away three-tier diaper cakes and it was killing my pockets.

  • Jack of all trades: You are doing too much. Yes, this week, you’re a jewelry designer, the next week, you are a life coach. This is exactly why gaining clarity is so important when you first start out.  Because if you don’t have clarity, you will think you are talking to everybody when in reality, nobody hears you.

  • Looking for Free stuff everywhere: At my earlier days, I was a google and youtube queen! I would stay up late nights and research and research and research until some nights I would end up sleeping in my office at the desk. I was so determined to find my answer, but guess what, it only led me to dead ends. No coach who has invested thousands of dollars, are going to give you a solution to your problem for free. I finally said enough was enough and I hired my first coach for $97 and believe me it was the greatest investment that I made. Not only was she a coach, but she was in the same industry as I was, so that was the icing on the cake.

I hope this article has been a blessing to you and that you are seriously taking a look at gaining clarity on who you are serving. Please share this with your family and friends because sharing is caring!

10 Must Have Tools For Busy Mompreneurs

I have been in business for almost eight years now and I have tried tons of tools and various programs. I can also tell you that if you don’t have your systems in place, you are setting yourself up for tragic. Earlier this year, I lost all three of my websites due spam and malware. I must say I had a three day crying spell and I had a fit because I have been blogging since 2009 and I lost over two hundred something of blog posts and valuable content. I can truly say, it made me up my game with the tools that I had been using. See, I was using a free version of anti-virus and with all that is going on in the world today with war and hacking. I was a great target.

What I learned from that experience

It taught me that you can never not have enough anti-virus and systems in place. I learned that even when i’m not working in my business, I have to have certain systems in place. After life happened to me in 2016, I left for an entire year. I wasn’t doing anything but working on myself and taking care of my babies, my mind, body and spirit. But, business as usual was going on and even though I wasn’t using my sites, I should have prepared more for my time being gone. So, I want to make sure you guys are prepared for the unexpected that can happen in business with my top ten tools in business.

How To Keep Yourself Business Oriented

For most home businesses, the computer and the Internet are an integral part of the success or failure of the business.

However, just like when you are at work, there’s always the temptation to check your email, talk to friends online, or play a game when you are not busy. However, just like at a job that you commute to, this should be something that should be avoided when you are working at your home based business. Stay tuned for a couple of ways to stay on track with your home-based business.

1) One way to help avoid doing this is to set up an account on your computer that is just for your home based business.

2) Set up an email that is just business, set up an instant messenger that is just business, and use the web browser to just do things that are part of the business.

The temptation is still there, of course, but if you start doing this right away you will find that it’s not so difficult.

The other reason that setting up an account that is separate for your business is good is because when you are doing things that are personal on the computer you will be less likely to work during your ‘off’ hours.

One of the biggest mistakes that people who work from home make is that they are ‘always’ working. They never allow themselves time to be ‘off the clock’.

This isn’t something that is healthy, and it’s something that should be avoided. Having a separate account on your computer helps to prevent this from happening.

I hope these few tips helps keep you business focused and become more productive while working from home.

5 Reasons Why You Are Not Making Money

Making money at home and in your business is the ultimate goal of why we are in the business in the first place. Moms want to be creative and be able to make money while taking care of their children.  The biggest frustration that I hear about when I speak to moms is they are not making money in their business and then they end up not doing anything at all because it’s too painful. Majority of the time, moms always put themselves last and do without so that their kids can have what they need. I know all too well about how this feels because when I first began my first business, The LaTersa Diaper Cakes, I wasn’t making crap and when I tell you, I was broker than Peter and Paul put together, that would be an understatement! My first year in business, I was in the -$3,000.

I was so hurt that it almost made me throw in the towel early. See, what I learned is that you have to be willing to put in the work, even when you are not seeing the results that you desire. Here are five reasons why you are not making money whether it’s in your business or at home:

5 Reasons Why You Are Not Making Money

    • You are not focused: You are trying to do too many things and when you are allowing yourself to become a jack of all trades, nothing sticks. You confuse people because one week, you are a jewelry maker and next week, you are a coach. If you need to gain clarity, don’t hesitate, do it today!
    • Not promoting: If you keep all your products and services to yourself and never tell anybody, how can you expect anyone to know that you are a solution to their problem.
    • You give up too quickly: Every time you hit a rough spot, you give up and start something else. You have to keep at it until you see the results that you want.

  • Too proud: You don’t want anyone to know that you are struggling and you need help. Everybody needs help and coaching at some point in their career.
  • Freebie queen: You think you will always find your solution on YouTube or Google.  Here’s a newsflash for you; no one will ever give you everything for free. It’s time you give yourself permission to get answers to your questions. Another reason is you might be giving away your products for free all the time.

Before you decide to throw in the towel, hire a coach so you can skip the drama and gain the clarity that you need. I always say you are your biggest investment and until you gain clarity, you will continue to go down the same path and keep getting the same results.  I hope this post has blessed you in some way or another. Please share this with your friends and family!

How To Start A Blog

This post includes affiliate links.

how to start a blogI’ve been a work at home mom since early 2009. I can tell you first hand that when starting a blog with little to no knowledge of what you’re doing can be a pain in you know what. Since starting my very first blog, I have learned a lot of things and I can tell you this; your blog has to have the proper resources in place in order for it to function.  Earlier this year, I lost all three of my blogs due to hacking and malware.

Now, that I got The Mommy Maven’s Blog back up and running, I have taken the necessary precautions to make sure my site is protected. I will be sharing with you tools and resources that I use on a daily basis to make sure my blog is running properly.

Several Tools Needed To Start A Blog

There are a few things that must be in place before promoting your blog to the world. Blogging platform, hosting, domain, SEO tools, backup tools, plugins and etc.

Blogging Platform: I highly recommend wordpress.org because it gives you more control and ownership of your content and blog.  In order for you to have a hub for all of your blogs, you need to understand what a platform for blogging is and it is simply your content management system.

Hosting: Is a website server that houses your content such as blogging, videos, and etc. I use Siteground for my blog.  You can get hosting from them for as low as $3.95. I find that you save more when you opt to pay annually instead of monthly. I paid $92.00 for an entire year for the business package. Before switching to Siteground, I was with HostGator and I always had issues with them; like shutting down myself without notice or warning. It was always something.

Domain: A domain is what you will use to direct people to your site. www.latersablakely.com is an example of a domain and you can grab domains for as little as $0.99 at godaddy.com.

Blog Design

Now, that you have your blog up and running, it’s time to design it and make it feel like you. Well, my first blog was Moms Wearing Multiple Hats and I uploaded an already mommy blog from one of my mommy friends, while it was nice and all, I couldn’t make changes to it because it wasn’t my own.  I kept it for years because it was very appealing to moms, which is my ideal audience.

I also changed back in 2011, to optimizepress because I wanted to be able to create my own landing pages and not have to continue to pay a designer to change my banner or create a landing page for me. I was spending tons of money just to update a banner. Yes, it can get very expensive if you add it over a year’s time.

If you want to stand out in the crowd and not look like everyone else, you should get an avatar or logo made. I have used a few designers in the past, but I recommend when starting out, invest at the level that you can afford. Fiverr is a great one starting at $5. Always look for the designers with the top ratings. I now use Canva for business and that is what I highly recommend to all of my clients.  I still use picmonkey for backup and it’s super user-friendly.

How To Make Your Blog Run Smoothly

Congrats on getting your blog up and running. So now you want to make sure it’s running properly and I have a few tools you want to incorporate within your site. These are plugins. Just add a new plugin and search for it.

  • All-in-One SEO
  • Jetpack
  • SG Optimizer
  • Speakpike (allows your visitors to leave you voice mail)
  • SumoMe (allows you to get visitors to opt-in to your list)
  • Askimet (spam plugin)
  • Shareaholic (allows your visitors to share your content via social media)
  • Wordfence (Antivirus and spam control)

How To Get Your Blog Visitors

Social media.  Are social sites that bloggers and mompreneurs use to get traffic to their sites. My all-time favorites are Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, and Google Plus. Now, my advice to you is to start with one platform and get good at that before you start trying to be all over the place. You want to share consistently on a daily basis because with how social media works, if you are not showing up regularly, people will forget about you.

Guest posts/Writing. You can sign up via other people’s blog that are within similar niches as your blog and do guest post. I have done this a lot through out my career.  In order for readers to visit your blog regularly, you have to have great content that they love reading. But, please don’t make the habit of just rushing through writing because I promise you, you will have a few typos. I suggest you use Grammarly, it’s one of my favorite

Email Marketing.  This is a way that you communicate with your audience. I have used Mailchimp my entire time working at home and I highly recommend them when you are first starting out. You can stay in contact with your readers via emails.

I hope you can find this post helpful to you. Be sure to share this with your mompreneur and mommy friends!

5 Advantages Of Working From Home

Have you ever thought about quitting your regular job and starting working from home instead? You’re not alone! Countless people make the switch every year, and it doesn’t look like this trend is stopping anytime soon. As technology gets better, more and more jobs can be done just as well without leaving the house. It’s no wonder most people are interested in it either, as there are many advantages to working from home:

5 Advantages Of Working From Home

1. You set your own hours

You’ll no longer be limited to working when someone else tells you to. Nothing is stopping you from pulling a 16-hour day on Monday and taking Tuesday off, or taking a few hours off in the middle of the day to go grocery shopping. If you’re the type of person who works best in the evening/night, you’ll no longer have to drag yourself up at 7 AM just because someone else tells you to.

2. You can work from anywhere

It’s usually referred to as “working from home”, but a better term might actually be “working from anywhere”. You can work just as well in a hotel room in Thailand, or from your favorite café, there’s no need to limit yourself to your home office.

3. You’ll save time and money

Working from home completely does away with the daily commute, meaning you’ll save both time and gas money. For some people who are used to commuting for 2-3 hours per day, this is huge. Use the money you save to improve your home office instead, or take an extra vacation every year!

4. You’ll be able to work un-interrupted

When you work in a regular office you’ll often have people interrupting you as soon as you get into “the zone”. It can be very frustrating, especially if you’re in a rush to complete an assignment. This is another huge advantage of working from home; unless you have household members who like to bother you (tell them not to!), you’ll be able to enjoy completely focused work with no interruptions.

5. You can invest in your health

Working in an office it may be difficult to find the time to eat healthy and visit the gym. When you’re working from home it’s generally easier, as you’re free to cook whatever you want for lunch/dinner. You can also take a couple of hours off in the afternoon a couple of days per week to hit the gym outside peak hours, avoiding the crowds of office workers who come in after work.

I hope these few tips will help you with deciding to work from home and have the flexibility to be home with your kids. If you want more ways on how to properly work from home and have harmony within your home, grab my Juggling Work & Family System Now.

The Craziest Thing I Did In Business

In business, I have done my share of crazy things but this one is by far the craziest and scariest thing I’ve done. I wanted to attend a business conference so bad, that I had to scrape up every penny that I had. Here is the breakdown, I had maybe thirty dollars to my name and I had to catch a flight, which I bought the tickets as a special so I wouldn’t know what time my flight leaves until I paid for it.  Well, My mama bought my plane ticket for exactly $333.00 and when I tell you I was the happiest gal on the block. If you lived close to me, you probably would have heard me a mile away screaming and doing my happy dance.

Here’s where it gets crazy! I almost missed my flight because of construction. We left three hours ahead of time but was stuck in delayed traffic for two of those hours. I barely had enough time to do anything by the time I made it to the airport, my flight was boarding. I remember like it was yesterday; I was running in heels with the security guard, now imagine this, I’m out of breath, trying to be cute because the security guy was cute; but boy, I was out of breath. When I did get to my seat on the plane, I had to use the bathroom, so I went to the bathroom and wouldn’t you know it, I got stuck in the bathroom, so I’m screaming at the top of my lungs, cause me and small spaces don’t do well together.  Then the bad part is I ended up staying at the airport bathroom because no one was available so they say to pick me up. It was midnight when I arrived at this city where I knew nobody. Yes, I was a scared somebody.

Here’s what I learned about myself:

  • I was determined to get to an event that would change my life. I was uncomfortable and scared. I had thirty dollars to my name and that’s it.
  • Even, though it wasn’t the most exciting and pleasant experience, I’m glad I went because I would never have met one of my favorite mentors: Les Brown
  • I took my doubts and fears and kicked them out the window and went anyway.
  • Finally, I took a chance on me

What’s keeping you from doing something that you know you need to do to help you grow as a person and as a business owner? You will never know what you are made of until you push yourself outside of your comfort zone. I want to invite you to take a chance on you this week and invest in your dreams. You have 5 hours left to take advantage of The START NOW and PROFIT for Life

3 Ways To Make Money With Shopping

As moms and mompreneurs, it’s always wise to have multiple streams of income especially in today’s economy. I have been working from home for years now and believe me, I have seen my share of scams and lies. When I first began this journey, I literally wanted to pull my hair out because I just couldn’t figure out why I wasn’t making money in my new business.  My biggest desire was to be able to support my family’s household income and at this time, I wasn’t. I wanted Mr. Blakely to feel like I was on his team and was supporting him, but again, no money was coming in from my business.

I got so frustrated to the point that I became a not so glamorous girl. All I wanted to do was make money from home so that I can be home with my children and eliminate childcare. Well, after years of being lied to and falling for every scam there was, I finally caught a break and learned about a thing or two that could bring me in some revenue while I was growing my business.

3 Ways That You Can Make Money With Shopping

  • Shop with Ebates: Yep, that’s right! The majority of you already shop online for your kids clothing and household items, now instead of just going straight to Amazon or JcPenny. Go through Ebates

  • Sell handmade items: If you are a crafty gal like me, I know you are always creating some beautiful pieces and just giving them away. Why not sell them on sites, like Etsy, Bonanza, or Ebay.

  • Become a mystery shopper: Did you know you can get paid to go on dates with your hubby? Did you know you can get paid to shop or take vacations at Disney World. Grab my ebook: Mystery Shopping 101 and get the details now.
