Work From Home Customer Service Jobs
More and more people are looking for work from home customer service jobs that they can do anywhere. A survey done with Flexjobs reported that 74% of their audience said working from home is the new normal. With everything that’s going on in the world, more and more people are turning to work remotely.
I was so miserable at my administrative job and I wanted to find a way out, so I quit my job and my business officially in 2009. I’ve probably tried just about every job that you can think of when it comes to working from home.
See, I wanted my freedom and to be able to be home with my children without having to worry about paying all of my checks to childcare. At that time, my kids were babies and to put both of them in childcare was costing me my entire check except for maybe twenty dollars.
This time last year, it was rather hard to find a great work at home job. But, with the crisis that’s taken place, work at home jobs are the hot topics now. Remote customer service representative jobs are some of the easiest ways to work from home. It’s how I got my start.
How To Become A Work From Home Customer Service Representative
So you are looking for legitimate remote jobs? right? You’ve decided that commuting to work is just not working for you anymore.
Well, customer service jobs are the easiest way to get your foot in the door. All you have to have is at least six months of customer service experience and a high school diploma.
What Does Customer Service Representative Do?
You can do this one of two ways. You can work for a fortune 500 company remotely at home. This is the quickest way to start your remote job career.
If you love being on the phone, working from home as a customer service representative will work perfectly for you. I’ve done these types of jobs for years. But as of lately, I’m leaning more so into non-phone jobs these days.
With these types of jobs, you can find part-time and full-time ones.
What Does Customer Service Jobs Pay?
With these types of positions, the pay can vary. The base pay for a job as a customer service representative starts at $10-$17. It all depends on your experience and how well you perform.
But no worries, you can rest assure that you will have a regular paycheck. You won’t have to guess about what you will get paid. You usually get paid every two weeks.
Make sure before you go to your interview that you read all the details about the position. You want to make sure it is a good fit for you and your lifestyle. Read all the fine print because you don’t’ want any surprises after getting hired.
When you are hired, you will either be an employee that will receive a W2 or you will be a contractor. With a contractor, you are responsible for paying your own taxes. Make sure you consult with the IRS to be certain of how much to pay quarterly.
Most of the interviews are done virtually whether it’s via the phone or zoom.
What Are The Requirements For Customer Service Remote Jobs?
Most of the companies offer part and full-time job opportunities. They always provide training, so if you don’t have the experience, they will train you.
What I know for sure is that each company’s requirements are different but most of them require the basics.
You will need a few things at home in order to work efficiently:
- A quiet workspace (preferable a room that has a door)
- A high-speed internet (hard wired, no wireless)
- A land-line phone
- A good working laptop
- A comfortable chair and desk
- VoIP phone & headset (not all but some do)
A few more things to keep in mind: you will need to pass a background check, be flexible and able to commit to a preferred schedule.
Other skills you will need to perform your job to the best of your ability:
- A positive attitude
- Familiar with Microsoft word and able to type very quickly
- Able to solve problems and a quick thinker

What Are My Hours As a Customer Service Representative?
With most of the jobs, the schedule is pretty flexible. You can determine which shifts work best for you when you apply. Some will allow you to work your own shifts while others will have a set schedule. When I worked for TTEC, I was full time. I worked 7.5 hours per day and my checks were pretty good.
Some jobs like Live Ops, they work in 30 minutes shift. You will have to bid on other shifts if you want to switch shifts with some of your co-workers.
When you start your job, you usually are in training for at least 3-6 weeks. During this time, they require that you don’t miss any days. When you think about your shifts, some of them allow you to work late hour shifts as well as early morning shifts.
How Do I Apply To Work From Home Customer Service Jobs?
When thinking of the application process, it works similarly to any job that you’re applying for. Make sure your resume is updated and it reflects the skills and experience that they are looking for.
Try to keep your resume with only jobs that go back no further than ten years. You don’t necessarily have to list every job you ever had. It only makes sense to highlight qualities and skills that reflect the position at hand.
You don’t list your references on the job application unless they ask you. Also, your resume only needs to be two pages. More pages will only make the process more complicated.
Make sure read the description and use those keywords throughout your resume. A lot of times, it is a bot that is looking over your resume way before it lands in the HR manager’s hand. You want to be able to stand out
Don’t get lazy and just apply for jobs through indeed. Take your time and write a great cover letter and address it to the hiring manager. To really stand out, search the company on Linkedin and find out exactly who the hiring manager is and their phone and email.
Send your entire resume and cover letter directly to them. This will give you an extra point for taking the extra time to do your research.
What Are Some Interview Questions?
- Why do you want to work for the company?
- Do you have any customer service experience?
- Have you worked remotely and for how long?
- If hired, what shifts are you available to work?
- Will you be able to work weekends and holidays?
Some questions you will be asked…
- How will you handle an angry and frustrated customer?
- What is the worst situation you’ve experienced while working with a customer?
- If a customer asked you to do something that goes again policy, how would you handle it?
- What are your weaknesses and your strengths?
- If a customer asked you for assistance, and you were not able to provide a solution, how would you handle that?
How do I recognize a Scam?
I have had my share of scams and I’m here to let you know that you have to be very careful. If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
If someone is asking you for money upfront, you need to know right off the bat that its a scam. I recall getting scammed out of $300 and oh how it hurt. It took forever for me to get my money back.
My biggest advice to you is to do your own research on a company before you start applying. Ask in forum groups on recommendations to see if other moms or dads have worked for the company.
Another great thing to do is to read reviews on the company’s website. Check the Better Business Bureau (BBB) to see the ratings and to see if the company even exists.
